The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) maintains a fleet of sea- and lake-going vessels, hovercraft, and aircraft. The variety of equipment allows the CCG to perform its mandated functions of navaids and sea-going transportation management, search and rescue, marine pollution response and the support of other Canadian federal authorities.

CCG 5901 is usually deployed in the South China Sea to enforce China's sovereignty claims over the disputed sea and its islands. [2] The vessel has been deployed near the Scarborough Shoal and the Second Thomas Shoal as well as the Philippines-controlled Thitu Island. [4]From December 2022 to January 2023, CCG 5901 has been staying in parts of the sea renamed by Indonesia as North Natuna Sea.
