飞碟是英文“Unidentified Flying Object”的缩写，意思是未查明身分的飞行物体。1947年，美国人阿诺德发现一组编队飞行的不明物体，并把它形象地比喻为“水上打漂的碟子”，从此，“飞碟”一词不胫而走，成为飞碟的通俗叫法。其实，“飞碟”一词并不是阿诺德的创造，人类对于不明飞行观察和记载，要追溯到远古时期。
